JFI Thought Leadership Series: 2020 Oscar Nominations

It’s that time of year, although it is a few weeks earlier than usual. You may have already guessed it. No, not the Super Bowl. It’s Oscar time! The 92nd one to be precise.

Still from THOSE WHO REMAINED (playing at the upcoming WinterFest 2020)

In my humble opinion 2019 films were pretty amazing, especially the documentaries and what used to be called Foreign Language Films yet are now being referred to as International Feature Films. Some of these global highlights that were shortlisted include South Korea’s Parasite, Spain’s Pain and Glory and Hungary’s Those Who Remained (which we will be screening at next month’s WinterFest).

Still from AMERICAN FACTORY (SFJFF39; Netflix)

Some of my favorite documentaries last year were American Factory (which we screened at SFJFF39 in 2019 and is available on JFI on Demand), For Sama, and Honeyland which were all nominated. In case you’re not aware, JFI is an Oscar qualifying Festival in the short documentary category, so let’s not forget some amazing short documentaries just nominated such as Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) and Life Overtakes Me directed by local treasures Kris Samuelson and John Haptas. Anyway, whether you love the Oscars broadcast, tolerate it, or detest it, check out these titles if you get a chance.
