The Violin Upstairs charts the true history of the filmmaker’s violin, from its birth in 18th-century Austria, to its existence in modern day San Francisco. The film reflects the incredible power that kindness and music can play in forging a new life

About the filmmaker: ASALI ECHOLS is a Bay Area filmmaker and film editor. She’s edited the award-winning feature documentaries 2e: Twice Exceptional (2015) and Navajo Math Circles (2016). Her directing credits include Fast & New (2019) and Lion on the Mat (2020). She loves telling unexpected stories, and highlighting the magic in everyday people’s lives.
Asali holds a BA in Film Studies from UC Berkeley, and an MFA in Cinema from San Francisco State University. The Violin Upstairs is her first foray into animation. On Twitter @asaliwoods
